The Deacons’ duties are to promote Christian instruction, minister to the church membership, provide for the Ordinances and aid in their administration. The Deacon Ministry demonstrates spiritual leadership by serving the pastor and congregation, supporting the pastoral vision, cooperating with the pastor in providing the pulpit supply, leading prayer meeting, visiting the members, and caring for the sick, needy, and distressed members of the church.
Acts 6: 1-8 (KJV)
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."
5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 So the word of God spread. T he number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. 8 Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.
1 Timothy 3: 8-13 (KJV)
8) “Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9) Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10) And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11) Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12) Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13) For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
